Pressestimmen

"Beginning in the halcyon years before the Exxon Valdez oil spill and continuing to this day, Saulitis has tracked individually known orcas to the brink of their population’s extinction. Into Great Silence is at once a love song to a wild place, an elegy, an inquiry into purpose and change, and a call to bring all our senses and ways of knowing to understanding and protecting our fragile world."—Pushcart Prize-winning author Nancy Lord"A vivid, moving depiction of a way of life tragically becoming increasingly endangered."—Kirkus Reviews “There's great tenderness in this book, and great pathos--sometimes one wonders if it's worth the pain to pay attention amidst the gathering storm, but this powerful account shows us that it's precisely by keeping track of the world around us that we stay human.” —Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth: Making  a Life on a Tough New Planet“Through Saulitis's growing understanding of biology, and through her heart, we soon find ourselves immersed in the fate of the third culture -- Prince William Sound's  intensely social, long-lived, black-and-white whales with brains considerably larger than ours. Fascinating suddenly becomes too cramped a word for either orcas or this book of self-discovery.”—Douglas Chadwick, author of The Grandest of Lives: Eye to Eye with Whales  “[A] sensitively written  memoir...Readers who enjoyed Alexandra Morton’s Listening to Whales: What the Orcas Have Taught Us will be fascinated by Saulitis’ account of her often remove, cold, and wet life as a field biologist and her respect for the whales and the people who lived around her.”—Library Journal "Saulitis’ stunning and sorrowful “book of contemplation” elucidates the discipline, tedium, danger, and bliss of whale studies; the solace she finds in art; and her intense relationships with her fellow orcaexperts. Candid, transfixing, and cautionary, Saulitis celebrates and mourns for a wondrous and imperiled species."—Booklist“The book is a must read—at once a visceral reminder of the fragility of our ancient planet, a requiem for its rapidly diminishing nature and a call to arms.”—American Scientist

Eva Saulitis' Into Great Silence is a beautifully written book. If you're an orca fan or want to know about orcas, don't pass this book by. It's not just scholarly, it's written with a sense of love, respect, and wonder.Saulitis spent many summers in Alaskan waters studying whales: photographing them, listening to them, and recording every detail. This may sound boring, but it absolutely is riveting. Readers come to know the whales, their personalities and their habits. And one comes to know Eva Saulitis as she grows from being a neophyte observer to a highly-skilled, seasoned observer.Saulitis' willingness to live in a tent in generally unpleasant weather for months at a time is in itself stunning. It takes not just dedication, but love for what one is doing. We all like to think of the wilderness in positive, glowing terms, but the reality is Alaskan spring and summer months can be cold, rainy, windy, and tough. (I lived in S. E. Alaska for two years. One year we had summer all in one day.) Even more inspiring, though, were the hours upon hours that the author and various companions who worked with her spent in a small craft filming, photographing, cataloging and listening to transient orcas. The book is tinged with sadness, however. As one gets to know the whales and reads of Saulitis' travails, the death of a large number of orcas due to the Exxon Valdez oil spill is hard to bear. I was aware of the spill when it happened, but after reading Saulitis' account of the devastation and death of so many marine animals, it is clear that the real truth of the matter was never really revealed. The clean-up was almost as bad as the spill.Watching the growth and transformation of Eva Saulitis due to her dedication and love of her project, pulls one in. Her observations are not just professional but also personal. Her writing feels almost poetic at times. Eva discovers things about herself, and readers are likely to discover things about themselves reading this book.Wonderful, tragic, hopeful, heart-breaking.

A beautifully written memoir about researching transient orcas in the Pacific Northwest. I could not put down this book. Having visited that area once, so many parts of it transported me back there, to the pristine beauty of those places. There is lots of information about orcas that Mrs. Saulitis captured as a part of her research, and this information is "packaged" in a beautiful book that reads almost like poetry. If you ever see this review, Mrs Saulitis, THANK YOU so much for sharing your knowledge and your thoughts with us and for writing this gorgeous book!

This is the best book I have read in four years. Ms. Saulitis combines factual information with the ease of reading a novel to tell the story of the transient Orca whales of Prince William Sound. Her switch back and forth from scientific observation to her personal reflections written in her journal made the book very enjoyable for me. Her style of writing made me feel like I was on Whale 1 with her, seeing the Orcas first hand. An excellent story about Prince William Sound, her beloved transient Orca whales and the impact the Exxon Valdez tragedy has had on all wildlife associated with the Sound.

In Into Great Silence: A Memoir of Discovery and Loss Among Vanishing Orcas, Eva Saulitis charts the lives of a single extended family of orcas in Prince William Sound, a family so devasted by the oil spill and subsequent changes that they are now on the verge of extinction. With scientific clarity and poetic intimacy, Saulitis describes her research and first-hand experiences with these whales. It is, truly, "a moving portrait of the interconnectedness of humans with animals and place-and of the responsibility we have to protect them." Lovely and heartbreaking, this book cuts to the core--which is exactly where, at this time of mass extinction and global warming--we need to be.

As a marine biologist and life time lover of marine mammals, I appreciated this moving story. I bought a second copy for a marine biologist friend. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the environmental costs of petroleum, or those who care about people and animals. If you watched the movie "Black Fish", you'll appreciate this book.
